Attended the Economic Society of Singapore Annual Dinner last night. Had a good discussion on Singapore’s progress over the past decade, and where we are heading over the next 20 years.

Our economy has grown faster than expected, but that has brought stresses and strains which we feel in our daily lives. Singaporeans are also anxious over competition and job security. We are working hard to address these concerns and improve Singaporeans’ lives.

In 20 years’ time, we hope Singapore will be one of the leading cities in the world. Our economy needs to be vibrant and strong to create opportunities for our people, and generate resources to invest in ourselves. Every Singaporean should benefit from growth. We will do our utmost to help all citizens through education and upgrading. We will also strengthen our social safety nets. Government will spend more on social programmes, such as affordable healthcare, support for low income households, and help for the elderly. But more important than spending more, we must foster self-reliance, keep ourselves competitive, and grow the pie so there is more to share. Singaporeans must make sensible choices together, to build a brighter future for ourselves and our children. - LHL
